Heritage Week takes place the last few days of August and beginning of September and is a European wide initiative to raise awareness of the natural and cultural heritage and to encourage people to participate in its enjoyment. Many local community groups, the Office of Public Works, National Parks and Wildlife and national and local museums participate in staging events and opening all state properties and parks to the public free of charge. Events include lectures, walks, boat trips, archaeological and wildlife tours, exhibitions and workshops for children and adults. For the first time the Heritage Council will be coordinating the events and promoting the week in 2006. This year the events will take place a week earlier to facilitate families and others before school starts and to allow for more outdoor activities and emphasis on natural heritage.
The Heritage Council seeks to protect and enhance the richness, quality and diversity of our national heritage for everyone. It works with its partners, particularly at local level, to increase awareness of our national heritage and to highlight its importance to public policy and everyday life.
