Know Your Arekibian : Gemma
Next up on our "Know Your Arekibian" journey is Gemma, a UX/UI designer who has a passion for cooking.
What was your journey to Arekibo?
I graduated from CIT in 2010 with a degree in Visual Communications. I put my portfolio up on a design recruitment site and within a week Arekibo gave me a call. I had little experience in design for web at the time so I spent the first few months constantly learning and I've been honing my craft ever since.
One thing most people don’t know about you?
I won first place in Corks Bonny Baby competition in 1986. I still have the trophy.
Project you’re most proud of?
Everymum. It was great to be able to work on a project with such a specific target audience - new mums - and I really get to understand how they would use the website.
3 things you have learned during your time in Arekibo?
-
When in doubt - ask the user
-
Communication is key to a successful project
-
Never stop learning - it’s so important to keep up with current industry trends
Favourite thing about your job?
The variety of work. I could be perfecting pixels in a design system one day and running a user testing session the next. It's never boring!
One thing you can’t work without?
An organised space. I get distracted if Im surrounded by clutter.
Personal motto
Work hard and be nice to people.
Apple or Android? Why?
Android. I was Apple for many many years but recently changed to a Google Pixel and its such a joy to use.
