Know Your Arekibian: Martin

Next up on the “Know Your Arekibian” series is Martin, Managing Director of Arekibo, with a passion for cycling which was shown when he cycled from Paris to Nice in aid of the Laura Lynn Hospise in 2017 and 2018.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

The diversity. There’s never a dull day.

One thing you can’t work without?

I do like listening to music when I work but I don’t get to do it enough. Oh, and power is needed too. 😊

3 things you’ve learned since the creation of Arekibo?

  1. Time moves too fast
  2. The change in the industry is relentless
  3. You’re nothing without your team

One thing people don’t know about you?

When I was 11 years old I had breakfast with Kenny Daglish (not that I support Liverpool). It was when Liverpool and Spurs came over to play a match in Swaziland and we were staying in the same hotel as both teams. Liverpool would be hanging around the pool all day and the only person that hadn’t signed my programme was Kenny so the team told me to go to his room and ask him to sign it. I plucked up the courage and went towards his room and ended up catching him in the hallway where he told me to follow him as he hadn’t had breakfast yet. Breakfast had finished being served but in true Kenny fashion, he made sure to get fed. We sat and talked for about 20 minutes and some of the team even came to join.

Why did you pick design to study?

Growing up in South African I was really interested in English culture. I used to buy the Smash hits magazine with really cool ads and I wanted to be involved in that. I just really liked creating things and wanted to do more with my skill!

Personal motto?

Be nice to people on the way up because you’ll meet them on the way down.

Apple or Android?

Apple, because I have a background in design and it’s in my dna.

Where do you see Arekibo in 5 years?

That’s for me to know and you to find out!
