AI Innovations in April

AI-Innovation-April-2025

Here’s a roundup of the intriguing AI developments from the past few weeks. We’ve left out the millions of image prompts that have kept many of us busy. So here we go.

Talk to Dolphins

‘Daddy, when will we be able to talk to dolphins?’ asked Toby.

In collaboration with researchers at Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project, Google introduced DolphinGemma, an AI model trained to learn the structure of dolphin vocalisations and generate novel dolphin-like sound sequences. We're not sure what Flippers' crew thinks, but DolphinGemma aims to decipher dolphin communication and generate dolphin-like sounds to facilitate human-dolphin interaction.

Firefly goes AI

Adobe unveiled significant enhancements to its generative AI platform, Firefly.

Key updates include the release of Firefly Image Model 4 and 4 Ultra, which deliver enhanced realism and greater creative control.

They also launched Firefly Boards (public beta), a collaborative AI tool for brainstorming and visualising ideas…another one to try out.

Deep Research opens for everyone

“It’s like having a research assistant who never sleeps — Deep Research can process dozens of web sources and provide a readable, reference-rich report in minutes,” said an OpenAI insider.

OpenAI has expanded access to its Deep Research tool, designed to help users perform web-based investigations, data aggregation, and summarisation with remarkable depth and speed.

India to create their own LLM

The Indian government has selected homegrown AI startup Sarvam under its IndiaAI Mission, to build the country’s sovereign Large Language Model (LLM). Sarvam will receive dedicated computing resources to create an indigenous foundational model capable of reasoning, designed for voice, and fluent in Indian languages.

Agentspace = Multi-Agent Systems

At Google Cloud Next 2025, Google introduced Agentspace, a platform for building and managing multi-agent systems. A multi-agent system (MAS) comprises multiple artificial intelligence (AI) agents that work collectively to perform tasks on behalf of a user or another system.

AI’s ok for the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ruled that films using AI are eligible for Oscar nominations. The new guidelines state that AI use will neither benefit nor disadvantage a film’s chances of winning, though preference will be given to films with greater human involvement. Did you know that Adrien Brody won best actor for his performance in The Brutalist, which used generative AI to enhance the actor's Hungarian dialogue.

Meet Agatha Christie

BBC Maestro launched an innovative series of online writing classes “taught” by the legendary crime author using AI. The course delves into mystery writing techniques, harnessing original writings, letters, and interviews.

Pinterest sorts AI images

Pinterest introduced features to address concerns over the proliferation of AI-generated images on its platform. Updates include automatic labelling of AI-created or modified images with an “AI modified” stamp, or a filter to see fewer AI-generated images.

There you go. It's an interesting time for AI and all businesses.
